The SPH Engineering UgCS AreaScan and True Terrain Following (TTF) Missions training is a specialized, hands-on course for UgCS users and Integrated Systems operators who already have foundational UgCS knowledge. Over up to 6 hours, students gain the practical skills to plan and execute AreaScan missions with elevation data, configure and operate SkyHub with an altimeter for TTF flight, and safely manage TTF and Grasshopper mission modes in real and simulated environments.
Training is delivered at the SPH Engineering office or via video conferencing. Duration: up to 6 hours. Price is per group of up to 4 students.
Prerequisites
- Completed UgCS Basics training (or equivalent knowledge and experience)
-
Required before training: The trainee must complete at least one automated test flight using UgCS AreaScan or Photogrammetry routes. Remote review of flight telemetry or photogrammetry results will be conducted at the start of the session. If the trainee cannot demonstrate completed mission results, the training session will be cancelled and must be rescheduled.
Training Outline
-
AreaScan Mission Planning with DSM — Planning AreaScan missions using Digital Surface Model (DSM) elevation data for terrain-aware flight path generation
-
SkyHub & Altimeter Installation — Installing and configuring SkyHub and the altimeter on a DJI drone for TTF-enabled operations
-
Custom Payload Monitor — Using the Custom Payload Monitor to control TTF and Grasshopper flight modes
-
UgCS for DJI App — Connecting to and controlling a DJI drone using the UgCS for DJI application
-
AreaScan Simulation (No Altimeter) — Simulating an AreaScan mission using the M600Pro in flight simulation mode without an altimeter
-
TTF Mode Simulation — Simulating AreaScan missions in TTF mode: enabling simulation, starting TTF mode, and interrupting the mode
-
Fail-Safe Actions in TTF Mode — Understanding and practicing fail-safe procedures specific to TTF flight operations
-
Remote AreaScan/TTF Mission Planning — Planning and simulating AreaScan/TTF missions where the survey area is far from the takeoff position
-
Battery Change Simulation — Simulating a mid-route battery change and mission resumption
-
TTF Safety Considerations — Understanding the ~1-second TTF algorithm delay and its implications for flight speed and altitude safety margins
-
Practical Exercises (in-person) or Remote Flight Analysis (online):
- AreaScan mission flight without TTF
- AreaScan mission using TTF
- Battery change mid-route and mission resumption
- Attempting to start TTF above maximum altitude
- Attempting to start TTF below minimum altitude
- Pausing and resuming TTF mode
- Grasshopper missions
