A thermal imaging drone reads heat instead of visible light. That lets a pilot spot a person in the woods at night, find hot spots after a fire, trace a failing electrical connection or check a roof for trapped moisture, all from the air.
- Search and rescue: thermal plus zoom finds a subject, and the Matrice 4T laser rangefinder marks the location for ground teams.
- Police and drone as first responder: docked aircraft such as the Matrice 4TD with DJI Dock 3 launch on their own to give officers eyes on scene.

NDAA, Blue UAS and the FCC Covered List
Many agencies need NDAA-compliant aircraft for federal grants. The Blue UAS Cleared List names drones that meet those requirements. On December 22, 2025 the FCC added foreign-produced drones and critical components to its Covered List, which blocks new FCC authorizations for new foreign models. Drones you already own, and models the FCC previously authorized, can still be used and sold.
Skydio lists the X10 as NDAA compliant. Freefly Astro Max (NDAA/Blue) with the Doodle Labs radio is on the Blue UAS Cleared List, per Freefly. DJI and Autel aircraft are not NDAA compliant. Read our DJI drone ban FAQ.

What is a thermal drone?
A thermal drone carries an infrared camera that reads heat instead of visible light. Crews use it to find people, hot spots and failing equipment at night, in smoke or in heavy brush, where a regular camera sees little.
Which DJI thermal drone should I buy?
For most agencies and inspectors it is the DJI Matrice 4T: a 640 × 512 thermal camera (1280 × 1024 with Super Resolution), a 1,800 m laser rangefinder, 112x hybrid zoom and up to 49 minutes of flight, per DJI. For a docked, remote program, pair the Matrice 4TD with DJI Dock 3.
What are the best thermal drones for search and rescue?
Look for a 640 × 512 thermal sensor, a zoom camera and a laser rangefinder to mark a subject's location. The DJI Matrice 4T has all three. The Skydio X10 pairs a FLIR Boson+ 640 × 512 thermal camera with 360° obstacle avoidance, per Skydio.
Which thermal drone is best for police?
The DJI Matrice 4T is the most capable handheld thermal option we carry. Agencies that need NDAA-compliant hardware should look at the Skydio X10 or X10D, or the Freefly Astro Max (NDAA/Blue). For drone as first responder programs, DJI Dock 3 with the Matrice 4TD launches on its own from a fixed or rooftop dock.
Can I run a drone as first responder program?
Yes. DJI Dock 3 with the Matrice 4TD launches from a fixed or rooftop dock, charges from 15 to 95% in about 27 minutes and is rated IP56, per DJI. Skydio also offers a Dock for X10.
Are DJI thermal drones still legal to buy?
Yes for models the FCC already authorized. The Covered List blocks new authorizations for new foreign models but does not ban owning, using or selling previously authorized models.
Which Maverick thermal drones are NDAA compliant?
Skydio lists the X10 as NDAA compliant. The Freefly Astro Max in its NDAA/Blue configuration with the Doodle Labs radio is on the Blue UAS Cleared List, per Freefly; the standard Herelink version is not. DJI and Autel aircraft are not NDAA compliant.
Can a thermal drone see through walls?
No. Thermal cameras read surface temperature, so walls, glass and dense cover block the view. They can show heat that has transferred to a surface, such as a hot spot on a roof or wall.
