The SkyHub Software Package for True Terrain Following (TTF) by SPH Engineering enables high-precision, low-altitude terrain following using a real-time altimeter sensor — radar or laser — integrated with the SkyHub onboard computer. Unlike GPS-based terrain following that relies on pre-loaded elevation models, TTF measures actual ground clearance in real time, maintaining a precise, consistent AGL altitude over complex, variable, or unmapped terrain.
How It Works
The SkyHub TTF software reads live altitude data from a connected radar or laser altimeter and continuously adjusts the UAV's flight altitude to maintain a constant, user-defined distance above the actual surface below — regardless of terrain variation, vegetation height, or elevation model accuracy. This enables safe, consistent low-altitude operations over terrain that would otherwise require conservative altitude buffers or manual intervention.
Supported Altimeter Types
-
Radar Altimeter (24 GHz) — High reliability over diverse surfaces including vegetation, soil, and uneven terrain; regulatory approval required in some countries (operator's responsibility to verify local regulations)
-
Laser Altimeter — Usable in any country; performance may be reduced over highly reflective surfaces such as water, ice, snow, and sand under bright sunlight
Key Benefits
-
Real-Time Surface Tracking — Continuous AGL altitude adjustment based on live altimeter readings, not pre-loaded DEM/DSM data
-
Consistent Sensor-to-Surface Distance — Critical for GPR, magnetometer, echo sounder, and other proximity-sensitive survey payloads
-
Safe Low-Altitude Operations — Enables confident flight at low AGL over complex terrain without manual altitude management
-
UgCS Integration — Works seamlessly with UgCS ground control software for mission planning and real-time monitoring
Supported Drones & Autopilots
- DJI M350 RTK
- DJI M300 RTK
- Pixhawk-compatible autopilots (Cube and equivalents) running ArduCopter firmware
Requirements
- SPH Engineering SkyHub onboard computer hardware (required)
- SkyHub Core Software Package (required)
- Compatible radar or laser altimeter (sold separately)
- UgCS ground control software license (required)
Important Notes
- Radar altimeter (24 GHz): operators are responsible for verifying regulatory approval for use in their country
- Laser altimeter: reliable over most surfaces; reduced performance over water, ice, snow, and highly reflective surfaces in bright sunlight
- New customers are recommended to order a complete combo package including software, hardware, and training
